WCU Alumni Share Nursing Options with Boys & Girls Club

Posted on 11/06/2017

West Coast University alumni took time this November to share their knowledge and passion for their careers and hopefully inspire the next generation of nurses.

Nearly 50 teens at the Richman Teen Center in Fullerton for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Orange County got a chance to meet one-on-one with several WCU graduates now working in healthcare. There were five nursing areas represented at the fair: medical-surgical with Gigi Lake Case; the emergency room hosted by Kelcie Garcia; the intensive care unit with Shirley Calderon; oncology by Jessica Chen; and wound care hosted by Heather Kindschi.

"Many of the teens mentioned knowing about an area of nursing, but were exposed to unknown areas as well. This was a great way for those who were already interested to learn the steps necessary and a great way to spark a passion in some who were new to the field of nursing," WCU Alumni and Events Coordinator Ingrid Hooker said.

Each group of 10 to 12 students spent approximately 20-30 minutes learning about the different departments and their role in patient care. There was also a raffle on behalf of the Alumni Network for a $100 donation to one of the teens to give back to any area at their Boys & Girls Club, plus Amazon and Subway sandwich gift cards.

Hooker said the career fair was a great way for students to meet nurses outside of the hospital, and that she's already eager to organize the next event. Her next goal, Hooker added, is to have an alumni booth for each program WCU offers.

"With the help and knowledge of WCU alumni, the Alumni Network is committed to giving back to the community," she said.
